Retired Kentucky State Trooper Elvin 'Russell' Campbell, 84 of Garfield, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2021 at Baptist Health Hardin. Born on August 3, 1936, son of Elvin and Hazel Grey Campbell of Summit, KY. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters Helen Johnson and Reba Heath and his brother Gerald Campbell.
He is survived by the love of his life for 60 years, wife Juanita Allen Campbell. Sons: Timothy Allen Campbell and his wife Joy and Gregory Scott Campbell and his wife Carol of Garfield. Four grandchildren: Holly Popham, Kelly Pate and husband Jordan, Conner and Corinne Campbell. Three great grandchildren: Iris and Hank Popham and Elizabeth Pate.
After high school graduation, Russ entered the United States Air Force. During his four years of active duty, he served as Commander of 42 D Air Police Squad. He completed six years of duty as reservist. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he became a Kentucky State Trooper where he served the Commonwealth of Kentucky for 27 years before retiring in 1985. During his distinguished career, Trooper Campbell received many commendations, was named an Honorary Colonel, and was named Trooper of the Year in 1980 for the Elizabethtown Post.
After retirement, Russ farmed with his brother Jerry and assisted his boys in their machine shop business. He loved carpentry work and assisted in the building of homes in the community. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and traveling with his wife and family. One of his greatest joys in life was his grand and great grand kids. He loved to see them all.
Russ attended Garfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 11:00 am CDT at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial with military honors to follow in the Garfield Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 3:30 - 8:00 pm CDT and Thursday from 8:30 am until time of service.
