John Edwin Monnahan

John Edwin Monnahan, age 67, passed away surrounded by his family Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Norton's Hospital in Louisville, KY.  He was born February 19th, 1951 in Hartley, IA, the son of the late Edwin and Vivian Monnahan.

In high school, John was a talented three-sport athlete and received honors in football, baseball, and basketball.  He went on to earn his Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Iowa.  He started his career as a medical technologist and went on to be a hospital CEO.  His later work helped to ensure that thousands of individuals in rural communities would have quality access to healthcare.

John was a very proud father of three boys and a grandfather of two.   He was incredibly generous to his family and a supporter of the Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed traveling, watching sports (especially NASCAR and the Iowa Hawkeyes), socializing and spending time with his family. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his younger brother Mitch Monnahan.

John is survived by his three sons and their families -

Jay Monnahan and Dr. Amanda Jacobsen of East Wenatchee, WA: John and Megan Monnahan of San Antonio, TX and their children Kaden and Clare: Patrick Monnahan and Jordan Koch of St. Paul Minnesota

Two brothers and their families - Mike and Pat Monnahan of Spencer, IA: Scott and Patricia Monnahan of Little Rock, AR

Visitation will be at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home 308 South Hardin Street Hardinsburg, KY 40143 on Wednesday, 1-16-2019 from 4-6 PM. Memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church  1111 4th Avenue West, Spencer, Iowa 51301 at 11 AM on Saturday, 1-19-2019.  Visitation will begin at 10 AM with the service to follow at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local Knights of Columbus.
