Hubert Greenwood, Jr. Obituary

Hubert B. Greenwood, Jr. age 89 of Hardinsburg, KY passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Hardinsburg Nursing and Rehab. Born in Cloverport, KY on December 19, 1929, Hubert, affectionately known as Junior or Junie, was the son of the late Hubert B. Greenwood, Sr. and Anna Basham Greenwood. He was a graduate of Frederick Fraize High School and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He held several different jobs during his lifetime, including a furniture factory worker, and the owner/operator of a dry cleaning business in Cloverport. Junie found his true career in life while working for the late Mr. Taylor Mattingly at Mattingly's Little Giant Food Store in Hardinsburg, KY. This experience and dedication led him to partner with his brother-in-law, the late Thomas Grause and form G & G Food Market, INC in Hardinsburg in 1960. The grocery which was located on East Highway U. S. 60 (now Old U. S. 60), was known for offering top-quality meats and produce, in a location with a big parking lot and air-conditioning, which was novel to the town. Both men and their employees formed friendships with several sales representatives and route salespersons who served them over the years. Upon the death of Mr. Grause in 1971, Junie was joined by the late Pat Wheatley as assistant manager, a partnership that lasted until the business closed in November 1988. He was a member of St. Romuald Catholic Church and the VFW. During his youth, Junie was known as a dedicated altar server at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cloverport, KY. He enjoyed reading westerns, working word search puzzles, watching TV westerns, mowing his yard and most of all, being Papaw to his grandchildren.

Along with his parents and brother-in-law, Junie was preceded in death by his wife, the former Catherine Grause, whom he married at St. Romuald Catholic Church on September 19, 1955, his precious son James W. Greenwood, his beloved sister Alta Marie Brown and her husband Eugene, his elder brother James Merlin Greenwood, along with sisters-in-law Mary Grause and Nellie Grause.
