Edward "Alton" Dowell, 69, died Saturday, August 3, 2019 at his home in Hardinsburg.
Born August 22, 1949, Alton was the second of seven children born to Jeff and Eler (Roberts) Dowell of Hardinsburg, Kentucky. He graduated from Breckinridge County High School in 1967 and married Levina "Viney" Hale in 1969 shortly before his induction into the U. S. Army. Alton was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving two years deployment overseas as a Specialist 4th Class assigned to the 21st Artillery Battery B, for which service he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. At home Alton loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and was known in his family for his loving nature, his sense of humor and his guitar playing.
He is survived by two children: Kelly (Tony) Powers of Hawesville, KY and Michael (Christa) Dowell of McDaniels, KY
six grandchildren: Sharon Powers, McKayla Powers, Chase Powers, Kayla Dowell, Brooke Dowell and Waylon Dowell
one great granddaughter Kaylee Embry
his mother: Eler Roberts Dowell of Hardinsburg, KY
six sisters: Dennice Smith, Lois Dowell and Barbara Dowell of Hardinsburg, KY
Maxine Smith of St. Augustine, FL, Phyllis (William) Austermiller of Radcliff, KY and Lori (Thomas) Helms of Jeffersonville, IN as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Jeff Dowell in 2002.
The funeral be will held at 11 AM on August 9, 2019 at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg, KY with burial in the Horlsey Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, 4-8 PM and Friday after 8 AM.
